Blanket Weight and GSM Explained

Calculate fabric mass from area and understand why total weight and GSM answer different questions.

Compare like measurements

GSM tells you the mass associated with a square metre of fabric. Total weight also depends on area and other components. Check whether a seller is describing one fabric layer or the complete item, especially for a reversible or filled blanket.

Compare two sizes at the same GSM

A hypothetical 1.5 × 2 metre single layer has an area of 3 square metres. At 300 GSM, its fabric mass is 900 grams. A 2 × 2 metre layer at the same GSM has 4 square metres of fabric and a calculated mass of 1,200 grams. The larger item contains more fabric; the fabric density is unchanged. Binding and additional layers are outside this simplified calculation.

A worked arithmetic example

For a hypothetical single-layer fabric at 300 GSM covering 2 square metres, fabric mass is 600 grams. Binding and other components may change finished mass. This example is calculation only; it is not a measurement of a catalog product.

Do not convert density into warmth

A stated GSM cannot by itself establish night-long comfort. You still need construction, composition, coverage and appropriate performance evidence. Likewise, a larger blanket may weigh more simply because it contains more fabric.

Use numbers to ask better questions

Quince lists 280 GSM for its waffle bed blanket, while the Utopia fleece model uses 300GSM in its name. These are different constructions, not a controlled warmth comparison. Record the numbers without declaring the larger one better. Ask how each value was specified and whether it applies to the selected variant.
